Sensory beanbags

Two fabrics, five sizes, all hand-made to order. The size you want depends on the child, what they use it for, and how much floor you can give up.

Not sure which size? Large and X-Large cover most homes. Go bigger only if you have the floor space — the larger sizes have more give, which is what makes them good for jumping into and rolling about in. Call 087 131 9619 and Julie will talk it through with you.

One beanbag, several jobs

The bigger sizes in particular change character depending on how you use them.

As a nest

A soft, safe indoor place to sink into — a cradle that takes the child's shape and gives feedback from every part of the body.

As a wrap

Let some of the beans out and a child can be rolled up inside it like a hotdog. The even, all-over pressure is calming and helps with focus.

As an armchair

Turn it on its side for full back support — a steadier, more upright kind of comfort.

As a landing pad

Somewhere it is safe to wrestle, crash into and climb back out of, indoors, without anything breaking. Use mats or pads on the floor around it during rough physical play.

Washing and looking after it

Fleece beanbags

  • The whole beanbag washes as one unit — beads, lining and cover together.
  • The cover is easily removed for washing.
  • A Medium beanbag can be washed in your washing machine and tumble dried as one unit — the beads stay in the bag during the washing and drying process.
  • For the larger sizes in a domestic machine, take some of the beads out first so it fits.
  • Gentle cycle, a small amount of mild detergent. No fabric softener.
  • Line dry, or machine dry on a short cycle — check every 10 minutes, it dries very quickly.

Lycra beanbags

  • Take the lycra cover off for washing.
  • Unlike fleece, the elastane in lycra can tangle in the machine and tear. Put the lycra cover inside a fleece cover, pillowcase or duvet cover and close it before washing.
  • Wash on a regular cycle. No fabric softener.

Putting it back together safely

The beads are harmful if swallowed, so the inner lining's zip should be out of reach once the beanbag is assembled. When stuffing the lining back into the cover, start at the zip end of the lining, so that the lining's zip ends up at the bottom of the beanbag, away from the outer cover's opening. Then close the outer zip and tuck it under its flap.

Beads

  • The sensory qualities are better in a less tightly packed bag. Take beads out for a squishier, cocoon feel; top them up for a firmer one.
  • Over the years the beads settle. Top them up as required — roughly every two or three years, though most people leave it much longer. Replacement beads are easy to find in home stores.
